War Memorial Dedication
Tillingham War Memorial was
unveiled on Sunday 2 September 1928.
The memorial was unusual in
that subscriptions for the memorial were raised entirely by 40
ex-servicemen aided by the addition of surplus fund from the
Tillingham Branch of the British Legion that had recently closed..
The fundraising was organised by a committee of
H S Hart, G H Raby, H Acaster, D C Taylor and K Cuthbe.The memorial which was made
from portland stone by Mssrs Wray and Fuller at Chelmsford was
placed on the south wall of the church
It cost £21 and specifically
included a ledge on which to place flowers.
30 Ex servicemen assembled in
the Square and marched to the church where a service has held by the
Vicar, Rev C G Gardner with an Orchestra led by Charles Chinnery.
A Union flag that had veiled
the memorial was removed by Frank Wright, whose brothers Albert and
Joseph had both died in the war.
A wreath was then laid by George Coker and Fred Rodda both of which had lost a brother in the war.
