Hugh Glendwr Palmer Owen

Hugh (Universally known as
Glen) was the 4th son of Bradwell Rector Edward Owen and was a
naturally gifted sportsman.
At Cambridge University he
gained a reputation as an athlete and played in goal for Notts
County Football Club.
He was most gifted as a
cricketer where he played for local Dengie Hundred sides and Essex
Cricket Club.
Glen played, as a steady
reliable batsman noted for his cuts and shots behind the wicket, for
Essex Cricket Club from 1881 to 1902 and from 1895 was Club Captain.
He played 136 Matches as a
right hand all-rounder , scoring 4,500 runs including 3 hundreds and
bowled 101 overs taking 9 wickets.
He also played a few games
for MCC including matches against the touring Australian side.
'Glen' played 136 matches and
scored 4510 runs with a top score of 134.

In 1908 he married Annie
Edith Sutton and moved to Landwick in Dengie village. As they
married comparatively late in life there were no children.
After retirement from cricket
Glen became Chairman or Bradwell Parish Council, Trustee, manager of
Bradwell Endowed School, Trustee of Aylett's Charity, member of the
Maldon Board of Guardians and a members of the Maldon area advisory
committee on education.
After just 4 years of
marriage he died, aged 53, at Landwycke, Dengie on October 20th 1912
and was buried at Bradwell on Sea on the 23rd October 1912.
As befitted such a popular
man his funeral taken by Rev Vardon (Tunbridge) and Rev Warmington
(Dengie) with organist W J Chell at Bradwell Church was well
attended.
