In 1821 the treasury commissioned a report called Parliamentary Papers Volume 14, which included details of men appointed to the customs service since 1816.

This list highlights men appointed to the customs service who served on the Rivers Crouch and Blackwater.

Remember that this is not a list of all the Customs men / Coastguards in this area in 1821 it is a list of those who joined the service since 1816.

NB

A coal meter was a customs clerk who literally count  the coal that was being delivered as coal was a valuable commodity which had a tax in it.

A coast waiter was a customs officer who supervised shipping for the landing of goods and excise associated with the landing.
