Burnham Horse Races

Horse races took place at Burnham on Crouch  in October annually from 1867 and ceased in the 1870’s on land on Marsh Road immediately next to St Mary’s Church.

The main organiser of the events was Daniel Pannell who owned the land and lived at Burnham Hall next to the site.

The course was marked out as circular and involved one grass meadow and one ploughed field with races requiring one to three circuits.

Attractions such as the Burnham Band, a bar provided by the White Hart Hotel and sideshows such as Duffields Steam Circus and a shooting gallery were included in the event which drew large crowds from the Dengie Hundred and beyond.
