Burnham Parish Council Elections 1894 & 1897 

 

This election was one of the most hotly contested for years with 24 candidates vying for the 500 votes on offer.
The hot issue was to do with the River and its use with parties in favour of the status quo with priorities to the Oyster Fisheries and parties with the priority of making Burnham  Yachting Station attracting tourism.
The Unionist Group favouring the Oyster merchants was Mssrs Ambrose, Cook, Croxton, Flick, John Hawkins, Lee, Newman, P Richmond, A Richmond, J T Rogers and J B Richmond.
The Progressive group ran a campaign aimed at a recreation ground and allotments was  Charles and E Read.

Rev Gooding was elected as Chairman.
Of the organised groups 5 of the 11 pro Oystermen were elected which gave them a strong but not unassailable position on the new council.

1897
By 1897 things had quietened down and fewer people attended the annual meeting to elect the Council.
There were about 50 electors present with 13 candidates for 11 seats.
