John Gamble was the first Chaplain General to the Forces and led the Army Chaplains Department and was Rector at Bradwell on Sea.
He was also an expert of telegraphy and published a book which was
accepted as the definitive work on communications for that period.
He used his experience in the
army and that of scientific experimentation to become an expert in
forces communication publishing ‘Observations on Telegraphic
Experiments, or the different Modes which have been or may be
adopted for the purpose of Distant Communication’. and then ‘Essay
on the different Modes of Communication by Signals’.
Communication at the time was by use of
semaphore and his experiments included the use the six arm system.
